Mt. Bulusan displaces more families


MORE than 2,700 families were evacuated as Sorsogon‘s Mount Bulusan continues to rumble while spewing heavy ash fall since Sunday.

On Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said there is a high level of volcanic activity in Mount Bulusan but no explosion was recorded.

With the development, Philippine National Police spokesman Agrimero Cruz Jr. said they ordered the evacuation of more families in the area.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that the affected families are now more than 13,700 persons from the 21 villages surrounding the volcano.

The affected families are housed in 11 evacuation sites, namely; Escuala Elementary School, San Juan Elementary School, Escuala Health Center, Escuala Chapel, Puting Sapa Barangay Hall, Puting Sapa Health Center, Aniog Day Care Center, Cogon Elementary School, Bursery Building in Juban, Irosin Senior Citizen Center, and Galanosa High School.

The NDRRMC recorded the first casualty, identified as Rolando Purino, 28 years old. He died due to asthma.

The disaster agency, through the help of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Health and other government offices, already sent help for the affected residents.

Alert Level 1 is still in effect in the area while the public is prevented from venturing inside the four-kilometer permanent danger zone of Mount Bulusan. (Glaiza Jarloc/Sunnex)
